Hadgraft-Wilson Residents Project

During the 2024/2025 season, the members of the Orchard Valley Quilt Guild created quilts for the residents displaced from the Hadgraft-Wilson Residences in 2023. These quilts were displayed in various venues during the summer of 2025.  In the fall, residents finally received their quilts. Their pictures and thank you's are shown below.

Thanks to all members who made quilts for this project and to Kathy Currier who organised our members and the distribution of the 48 quilts!

Thanks again for bringing it to me. It's beautiful.
As for thanks to the guild for offering such kindness. I and I'm sure many from Hadgraft greatly appreciate it. When those who are supposed to support us have failed us, on all levels, it really keeps the hope alive to see those selflessly trying to help others.

I am writing you this email to thank all Orchard Valley Quilters Guild members so very much for all of the hard work and talent that was poured out into making my lovely quilt.
I will very much treasure it, as it really signifies the love and support of the community that we have been able to feel from you all at the Orchard Valley Quilters Guild.
As I am writing you this email, I am in-fact snuggling underneath it and am enjoying it thoroughly!
Thank you so much again!
Best regards,

Loving my quilt.

Thank you. My kids are not aware yet and I can’t wait to show them. I want them to send a thank you note to you and the quilters so please let me know an address! They do not write so I’ll get them to dictate to me! I do think that you are providing something beautiful for these people who feel so different and so, generally have low self esteem. Trying to find them accommodation after leaving their home showed me how very little people care about disabled people. It was quite an eye opener for me. So I believe that what you do is very meaningful and I thank you.
Thank you so much. They are so beautiful. We appreciate it. you can tell all the love and hard work that went into them we are blessed thank you again

The quilts are beautiful. Thank you.  This is a very meaningful gift for my children who have felt such confusion and anxiety following the loss of their home and friends.  Thank you.

When a quilt is much more than just fabric and stitches. I can't imagine how many hours it takes to make a beautiful quilt let alone all the quilts made for the evacuees of Hadgraft Wilson Place. I want to tell you how much I appreciate the time and effort of undertaking such a project and what it means to me. This quilt provides me with so much comfort in a lot of different ways. It makes me feel special that someone took time out from their day to create this beautiful quilt. It makes me smile just to see it in my studio apartment. It brightens up my spirit and it is a symbol of hope for my future. There are a lot of days I'm afraid to leave my apartment because of my health and this quilt gives me the comfort and support I need to get through the day.Of course it gives me warmth when I wrap it around me to settle my nerves and I remind myself that someone very special is thinking of me. The quilt is a symbol of strength to carry on.
With All My Heart, Thank You to the special group of people at the Orchard Valley Quilters Guild

The inspiration for the project

Hadgraft Wilson Place building was opened in June 2023 and welcomed residents to 68 new affordable rental homes. The building was financed by BC Housing and is owned and managed by the Pathways Abilities Society. (from City of Kelowna)

The low-income apartment saw residents move out on April 2 after neighbouring construction of the University of B.C. Okanagan's downtown Kelowna campus caused ground shifting and structural damage to the building.
Residents have continued to pay rent to Pathways Abilities Society, the building managers of Hadgraft Wilson Place, in exchange for temporary housing solutions. The tenants were first put up at various hotels in Kelowna before securing the new dorms at Okanagan College for the summer.  As of Aug. 15, 2024  tenants were required to move out of the college dorms. The residents were displaced at various locations around the valley, and some even had to move beyond.  The City of Kelowna has announced that a new residence will be build in the next two or three years.
