MODley Crew Modern Quilting Group
The MODley Crew meets on a rotating schedule: Everyone is welcome as a participant or as a spectator. You don't have to sign up or attend every month. Drop ins are encouraged.
This group of modern quilters started in 2015 in an attempt to fill a gap that existed in “normal” sewing/quilting techniques used, and to draw younger, modern crafters into our guild as members and into what had been a mostly traditional quilting world.
Our modern quilters can do either small art pieces or (most commonly) smaller quilts for the KGH – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Modern quilting can break down “traditional” block formations and colours in order to reform them in different more simplified ways. It also stresses the creation of “free form” quilts & art pieces that incorporate more space, challenge the norm and allow the actual quilting patterns of a piece to shine. The fabrics/colours used in modern quilting are plain and bright - usually from the primary group on the colour wheel such as blue, white, green, yellow, red, and black, and rarely have any decorative printing on them
Come and join us and find out just how creative your brain could be!

Block Lotto Guidelines
- Anyone in the guild may participate in the block lotto. For each block submitted the guild member receives one ticket. The winning ticket holder takes home all of the blocks. If the unlikely event that there are a large number of blocks the prize may be split between two individuals.
- No one is obliged to enter the block lotto but the more blocks that are entered will mean a better prize for the winner.
- Please follow the instructions for the blocks with regards to color selection or construction. This gives the winner similar blocks to use however she chooses to use them.
- There are no restrictions on the number of times that a participant can win.
- Bring your completed blocks on the first meeting of the month.
November 5,2024 block lotto is the Poppy block. Please make your blocks 8.5 inches unfinished and 8 inches finished. Please use white-coloured background fabric and red for the poppy. There is also a PDF that you can download/print for your own use.
HINT: If you are looking for ideas for quilts for the NICU please use the website for this or past block lotto blocks. Many blocks are easy and would make great baby quilts.
Please call/text me at 778-908-6733 or send me an email at [email protected] with your questions.
Thanks,
Phyllis

Block Lotto – November 5, 2024
Poppy Block – 8 inches finished and 8.5 inches unfinished
Colours – Red, Black center, white background
Cut:
Red Fabric: 4 – 4.5-inch squares
Black Fabric: 4 – 2.5-inch squares
White Fabric: 4 – 2.5-inch squares
Stitch and Flip -
Draw diagonal lines on the backs of the black and white 2.5-inch squares.
With right sides together sew one black square to the top right corner of a red 4.5-inch square. Trim the excess fabric ¼ inch from the seam, press seam outward. With right sides together, sew one white square to the left corner of the red square. Trim the excess fabric ¼ inch from the seam, press the seam outward. The red square should look like a house with a white sky to the left and a black sky to the right. Continue to stitch and flip with the other three red squares.
Once you have finished the four blocks sew them together with the black triangles in the centre of the block. You can then trim your block to 8 ½ inches square.
HINT: If you press one of the seams outward and the other inward you can “nest” the seams when you sew the blocks together making it easer to accurately piece this block.
I have added a tutorial below.
